Kathmandu, Oct 9: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the Nepal Postal Service so as to developing it into a centre of e-commerce at the national and international level.
In a message of best wishes given on the occasion of the World Post Day today, he said diversification and modernization of postal service is the need of the day rendering the global communication through postal services more effective and timely.
“The government is committed to promoting the Nepal Post Service to make it the centre of e-transactions at the national and international level with the use of information technology,” Minister Gurung stated in the message.
He has stressed on the need of diversifying the domestic postal services, suggesting the Nepal Postal Service to maintain its glory and credibility by providing prompt, timely and efficient services while competing with similar services like courier and parcel service and transport service operated by the private sector.
The Communications and Information Technology Minister said the restructuring of the Post Office has been carried out in line with the concept of ‘one local body – one post office’ for the structural transformation of Nepal Post from the current fiscal year.
“The Nepal Post is always committed for partnering with the Universal Postal Union on the topic of providing quality postal services to the postal service users throughout the world,” Minister Gurung said.
Postal service needs to be further enhanced technologically: Secretary Aryal
Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Radhika Aryal, has insisted on the need for improvements from the structural level to the regulatory framework to increase the relevancy of the postal service in today’s context.
Speaking at an inaugural session of the Postage Stamp Exhibition organised by the Department of Postal Services on the occasion of the 150th World Post Day today, the Secretary echoed the need to make the postal service more technology-friendly and attract the interests of youth to it.
Assuring of the government (Ministry’s) support to further strengthen the service, she urged the Department employees to deliver with additional creativity. The exhibition is supported by the Nepal Philatelic Society and it displays postage stamps from across the world including Nepal.
On the occasion, Department’s Officiating Director General Dhruba Raj Acharya said the postal service that had commenced in Nepal in 1935 BS from a post house has to resist numerous challenges brought by the changing time.

The celebration of the Day marks the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) on October 9, 1874, and the theme for this year’s celebration is “150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations”.
Nepal has been a member of UPU since July 11, 1956.
Director at the Department, Bishal Sapkota, Nepal Philatelic Society’s Chair Chandra Rabi Shrestha, and trade union leader Tanka Prasad Humagain gave their views on focusing on the past, present, and future scenario of the postal service.
