Health Ministry closes down two pharmacies outside of Bir Hospital



Kathmandu, Feb 15: The Minister for Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet has directed to close down two pharmacies operating outside Bir Hospital.

During the onsite inspection conducted today under the coordination of the Ministry of Health and the Department of Drug Administration, Minister Basnet ordered the closure of Satyam Pharma and Upakar Sewa Pharma after they were found selling and distributing expired and unregistered medicines.

He said, “We found that two pharmacies outside Bir Hospital were selling expired medicines. Similarly, drugs were found to be sold at high prices. Even the medicines were kept without following proper procedures.”

Minister Basnet also said that free medicines were hidden in the store of Bir Hospital itself and patients were made to buy them from outside pharmacies.

Minister Basnet informed that discussions are being held with the management of the hospital about establishing a pharmacy in the parking area of the hospital. He said, “We have working to establish a pharmacy inside the premises of Bir Hospital to make sure that necessary drugs and expensive drugs for surgery are available.”

Narayan Prasad Dhakal, Director General of the Department of Drug Administration, said that during the inspection, drugs that should be kept in the fridge were found to be kept open outside. #Nepal
