Kathmandu, June 11: Minister for Home Affairs Sudhan Gurung on Wednesday visited the holding centre in Balaju, where squatter families have been temporarily relocated.
During the inspection, Minister Gurung apologised to the families for past mismanagement and assured them that the government is committed to their proper care. “The government will manage your problems by all means. We are focused on resolving this issue,” he said.
Minister Gurung acknowledged that shortcomings may have occurred during the management process and sought the families’ understanding, reiterating the government’s seriousness in addressing their situation.
Squatter families at the holding centre raised concerns over difficulties in securing education for their children, despite being provided with accommodation. Responding promptly, Minister Gurung directed authorities to deploy a police team to ensure proper management in the area, according to the Home Minister’s secretariat.
He also instructed concerned authorities to maintain up-to-date records of the holding centre and to swiftly address any problems that arise.
The Balen Shah-led government has dismantled squatter settlements along Bagmati, Bishnumati, Dhobikhola and Manahara riverbanks. The displaced families have since been relocated to holding centres in Balaju, Kirtipur, and Banepa.
Residents of the holding centres have raised concerns over the indefinite duration of their stay, lack of educational access for their children, and the absence of a long-term plan for permanent resettlement. #nepal
