Lightning kills 50 sheep and goats in Jumla, another 70 missing

Jumla, July 15: At least 50 sheep and goats died due to lightning in Dugada Patan located in Patarasi Rural Municipality-2 of Jumla district.

Jana Maya Rokaya, Vice Chairperson of Patarasi Rural Municipality, informed that another 70 sheep and goat were missing due to lightning that struck at around 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 14.

Forty two goats and eight sheep died due to lightning, said Gagan KC, head of Veterinary Branch of Patarasi. Residents of that rural municipality, Krishna Aidy, and Mim Bahadur Bohora’s sheep and goats died due to lightning.

According to Animal Hospital and Animal Services Office Jumla, Patarasi is famous for sheep and goat rearing. Every year lightning causes huge damage to sheep and goats. Locals said that after the sheep and goats died due to lightning, there was a problem in paying the household expenses.

Aidy, a sheep farmer, said that the municipality has requested the federal and provincial government agencies to take initiative for relief.

He said, “We have informed that the sheep died due to lightning. We have also appealed to the relevant agencies for assistance for relief and compensation.”

Jana Maya Rokaya, Vice Chair of Patarasi Rural Municipality informed that the support will be provided by the local government.
