KATHMANDU: The local administration officials have agreed to operate public transport in the Kathmandu Valley through odd-even system.
A meeting of the chief district officers of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur on Sunday reached this conclusion.
However, Kathmandu Chief District Officer Kali Prasad Parajuli said that no decision has been taken yet on what other criteria will be implemented. “There has been a discussion about whether to allow public transport to operate under the alternate system,” he said.
Transport businessmen have expressed dissatisfaction over the new system. Saroj Sitaula, General Secretary of the National Federation of Nepali Transport Entrepreneurs, said that they would not be responsible for the spread of coronavirus infection due to increased passenger pressure with limited vehicles. “There has been no official decision from the administration so far, but we only know that there has been a discussion between them,” he said.
He suggested that the congestion should be reduced by allowing everyone to drive. “We have already given a scientific suggestion to the administration regarding the smooth operation of public transport,” he said.
