Minister Pun presses need for linking science and research with economy

Lalitpur, Dec 6: Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Mahabir Pun, has echoed need to directly link science and scientific research with the economy if Nepal aims to achieve sustainable economic prosperity.

Addressing a special award ceremony organized here today by the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) on the occasion of its 43rd anniversary, the Minister highlighted that insufficient investment in science and technology, coupled with its isolation from economic planning, has weakened the sector significantly.

“Keeping science and technology on the backburner has not only hindered its growth but has also slowed down the overall development of our economy, pushing Nepali society backward,” he said.

Minister Pun further added that structural issues from the past to the present have contributed to the sluggish progress in information technology innovation and development.

He stressed that many of the challenges faced by Nepali citizens today ranging from economic hardships to social issues are linked to the neglect of the significance of science and technology.

Highlighting the need for reforms, the Minister also called for depoliticizing institutions engaged in science and IT-related academic and research initiatives, emphasizing that such steps are essential to foster innovation and productivity.

He expressed his confidence that, even with limited resources, NAST can achieve remarkable results if given proper support and guidance.

“The government must prioritize planned development of research and innovation,” he added. “If given the opportunity, I would ensure that at least three billion rupees are allocated annually for research and innovations in the country.”

Minister Pun also expressed concern over the lack of a culture of operating innovation centers at the individual level, while commending the NAST for its accomplishments.

On the occasion, NAST recognized the contributions of 13 scientists for their outstanding research in various fields.

In addition, five senior scientists were felicitated for their lifelong dedication to advancing science and technology in Nepal. #nepal #rss
