NC mourns passing of mountain legend Sherpa

Nepali Congress Head Office

Kathmandu, Oct 17: The Nepali Congress has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Kancha Sherpa, a member of the first successful expedition to Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) alongside Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

Sherpa passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. He was the last surviving member of the historic expedition that reached the world’s highest peak on May 29, 1953.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the party described Sherpa’s demise as the final farewell of an experienced and acclaimed climber and a living witness to a feat in mountaineering history.

His demise marks an irreparable loss to Nepal’s tourism sector and for the global mountaineering community, where he served as a source of inspiration, the party said.

The party paid tribute to the late Sherpa and extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.#nepal #rss
