Kathmandu, April 11: The Mountain Clean-up Campaign 2024 (Safa Himal Abhiyan) which is being conducted under the leadership of the Nepali Army with the aim of protecting biological diversity and environment, has been launched today with the Flag-off Ceremony.
Nepal Army Commander in Chief General Prabhuram Sharma handed over Campaign Flag to Campaign Leader Second Leutenant Aditya Karki amidst a program in Army Headquarter.
On the occasion, CoAS Sharma said that since mountain environment protection is a matter of public importance, the mountain cleaning campaign will be successful only with the joint efforts, coordination and cooperation of all stakeholders.
Expressing his belief that this campaign will successfully achieve its goals due to the experiences of the last five years in the Safa Himal campaign and the detailed and practical planning of this year, he expressed the belief that the success of this campaign will not only be determined by the amount of garbage collected, but also by the awareness that will be spread through the campaign and that it will bring.
Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Dr Deepak Kafle wished for the success of the campaign.
Under the national program of the Government of Nepal, the campaign is being conducted under the leadership of the Nepali Army with the technical support of the Ministry of Forest and Environment, Khumbhu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, Nepal Mountaineering Association, Himalayan Rescue Association, Everest Link, Avni Venture, Expedition Operator Association and other organizations.
Under the main theme of AN ENDEAVOR TO SAVE THE HIMALAYAS, the campaign aims to manage 10 tons of garbage and 5 human corpses from Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse mountains.
The cleaning team, which has completed about 3 weeks of pre-deployment and acclimatization training, will leave for Mount Everest base camp on Baisakh 2, 2081 BS and will be engaged in cleaning work according to the work plan for about 50 days.
Among the collected wastes, the decomposable wastes will be handed over to the local bodies and the non-decomposable wastes will be handed over to the recycling organization for management.
The Nepali Army believes that the campaign will help to minimize the impact of environmental pollution in the high mountain regions. #Nepal
