Kathmandu, May 7: The government has launched an online service allowing Indian and other foreign tourists entering Nepal by land to obtain vehicle permits and pay customs fees digitally.
The new system, developed by the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance, enables foreign vehicle owners to submit required details and pay revenue online before entering Nepal.
Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle officially launched the service during a programme held on Tuesday at the ministry.
Previously, tourists travelling with vehicles had to visit customs checkpoints physically to obtain temporary permits. If the permit duration expired during their stay, they were required to revisit customs offices for renewal or face penalties.
With the new digital system, tourists can now complete the permit process from home, pay fees online, and travel within Nepal more conveniently.
Speaking at the launch event, Minister Wagle said the initiative aims to improve public service delivery and eliminate difficulties faced by tourists at border points.
“This service reflects the government’s commitment to good governance and efficient public service delivery,” he said.
Director General Shyam Prasad Bhandari of the Department of Customs said the digitisation of temporary import permits for foreign tourist vehicles would make the process more transparent and efficient.
According to the Department, travellers can self-declare vehicle details online and pay the required fees either digitally or through bank counters. After submission, users receive a QR code via email, which can be shown at customs checkpoints for entry into Nepal.
The QR code also allows tourists to travel throughout the country without additional paperwork. If the travel period expires, extensions can also be processed online from anywhere within Nepal.
To use the service, travellers must visit the Department of Customs website, open the “Our Services” section, select the “TIV” option, and complete the online form. After submission, a QR-coded permit is generated electronically.
Officials say the system is expected to simplify cross-border travel and promote tourism by reducing administrative hassles for foreign visitors. #Nepal
