Kathmandu, Dec 2: Krishna Man Dangol of the Nepali Congress has been elected as the Mayor of Kirtipur Municipality.
Dangol secured 5,506 votes, while his closest competitor, Shiv Sharan Maharjan from the Maoist Centre, garnered 5,067 votes. Similarly, Surendra Manandhar of the CPN-UML managed to gather only 4,326 votes.
The by-election was held following the demise of former Congress-elected Mayor Rajkumar Nakarmi on Shrawan 10, 2081 due to kidney-related illness. This is a significant development in Kirtipur, historically considered a stronghold of left-wing parties, as the UML suffered a complete defeat for the first time.
Kirtipur was declared a municipality in 2054 BS, and Rajkumar Nakarmi was the first mayor elected from Nepali Congress. In this election, Congress candidates won 9 out of 10 ward chairperson seats, marking a major victory for the party.
Additionally, on the same day, Congress candidates Ichchha Kumar Maharjan and Rajendra Baniya were also elected from Kirtipur-1 and Kirtipur-4, respectively. #election #nepal
