Kathmandu, Jan 19: The ongoing internal dispute within the Nepali Congress appears to be moving toward resolution after the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction agreed to withdraw a writ petition filed at the Supreme Court against a decision of the Election Commission.
The writ had been filed after the Election Commission granted legal recognition to the new Central Working Committee elected under the leadership of Gagan Kumar Thapa through a special general convention convened. The Deuba faction had challenged the Commission’s decision in the court.
According to party sources, the Deuba faction’s agreement to withdraw the writ has paved the way for resolving the party’s recent internal conflict. As the preliminary hearing on the writ was scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, preparations are underway to withdraw the petition before the hearing.
Amid the intensifying dispute and the resulting split within the party, tripartite talks involving the Gagan Thapa group, the Deuba group, and the Dr Shekhar Koirala group have been underway since Monday morning. These negotiations are focused on finalizing candidates for the first-past-the-post seats ahead of the nomination filing scheduled for tomorrow for the upcoming House of Representatives elections.
The source further stated that an understanding has been reached whereby the Deuba faction will withdraw the writ, while the Gagan Thapa group will retain the proportional representation candidates previously endorsed with Deuba’s signature. In return, candidates for the direct election seats will be distributed through mutual consensus among the factions.

Following his formal recognition as party president by the Election Commission, Thapa has intensified the process of selecting candidates whose nominations are to be filed on Tuesday.
In the first phase, Thapa has distributed tickets to candidates from Himalayan and high hill districts. According to party sources, candidates for 42 constituencies have been finalized and announced in this initial round.
