Nepali Congress names nine candidates for the National Assembly

Nepali Congress meeting, 2026

Kathmandu, Jan 7: The Nepali Congress has finalized the names of its candidates for the National Assembly.

Accordingly, the party has nominated Sunil Thapa from Koshi Province; Dhamendra Paswan and Ranjit Karn from Madhesh Province; Gita Devkota from Bagmati Province; Jagat Timilsina from Gandaki Province; Basudev Jangali and Chandra Bahadur KC from Lumbini Province; Lalit Bahadur Shahi from Karnali Province; and Kham Bahadur Khati from Sudurpaschim Province.

With these nominations, the Nepali Congress will field nine candidates. The CPN-UML had already finalized its candidates earlier. According to the latest reports, both the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML will have nine candidates each for the National Assembly.

Earlier, it was agreed that the Nepali Communist Party would be allocated three seats. However, after the party’s chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ insisted on securing at least four seats, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML redistributed the seat allocation between themselves.

Meanwhile, General Secretary Gagan Thapa raised voice against the selection of party candidates. He said that the party leadership has broken the principle, process and naming of the candidates. Thapa alleged that the party’s secretariat chose the candidates without proper consultation, discussion within the party itself, and tried to corner both the general secretaries. #nepal #congress
