NRNA President Sharma: Organization must be free from political interests

Kathmandu, March 21: Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) President Dr Hemraj Sharma has said the organization must remain free from the influence of money, power, and political interests, following its recent unification after prolonged internal disputes.

Elected unanimously at the NRNA’s 12th General Convention, Sharma said the key priority is to rebuild trust and expand participation among the global Nepali diaspora, estimated at around 8 million, of which only about 130,000 are currently affiliated.

He stressed the need to transform NRNA into an inclusive and rebranded global platform, moving beyond the perception of being a “rich people’s club” or political space. “NRNA should not be driven by politics, financial influence, or misuse of power,” he said.

Sharma outlined plans to introduce online voting, allowing members worldwide to participate without traveling to Nepal, which he believes could significantly increase membership.

He also emphasized addressing key diaspora issues such as citizenship rights, investment facilitation, and knowledge transfer, while promoting training programs for migrant workers and orientation sessions for students going abroad.

Highlighting investment, Sharma said NRNA’s role is to facilitate and connect investors, not directly invest, though efforts are underway to mobilize larger institutional funds.

On challenges, he noted the need to sustain unity, strengthen grassroots networks, and prepare a comprehensive “white paper” on the status and potential of Nepalis abroad.

He also reaffirmed NRNA’s readiness to support Nepalis in crisis situations, particularly in conflict-affected regions, stating that relief mechanisms and emergency funds are already in place.

Calling for collaboration with the government, Sharma expressed optimism that upcoming policies would create a more diaspora-friendly and investment-friendly environment in Nepal. #nepal #NRNA
