NTA cancels license of Smart Telecom

Kathmandu, April 17: Nepal Telecommunication Authority has revoked the basic telephone service license of Smart Telecom Pvt Ltd. It is said that license of Smart Telecom was automatically canceled as it was not renewed according to the Nepal Telecommunication Authority Act.

The Authority has said that Smart Telecom’s license was revoked after it did not submit an application with fee for license renewal. According to the authority, Smart has to pay more than Rs. 20 billion as renewal fee, but has paid only Rs. 750 million so far.

The Authority had given time till April 16, 2023 to renew with all the funds. But since Smart did not submit any application within that period, their license was automatically revoked. According to the Telecommunication Service Provider’s Property Management Regulations 2079, the Authority has given the responsibility of the company’s service operation and property auction to the management group.

Smart was lobbying to different political groups to renewal but failed.
