KATHMANDU: The Prachanda-Madhav faction of the Nepal Communist Party, which is on the verge of splitting, has officially informed the Election Commission that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been removed from the post of party chairman.
NCP Standing Committee Member Lilamani Pokhrel said that a letter was filed with the Election Commission on Thursday removing Prime Minister Oli from the post of party chairman and appointing Madhav Kumar Nepal as the chairman.
He said, “Article 18 of the Political Parties Act has a provision to take action against the officials working against the party statute. We have informed the Commission that action has been taken against Oli accordingly.”
A meeting of the Central Committee of the Prachanda-Madhav group held at Babarmahal on December 22 had decided to take disciplinary action against Oli. Pokharel said that the meeting held in the presence of 315 out of 441 central committee members informed the commission that action had been taken against Oli. The Oli faction, on the other hand, has said that the Babarmahal meeting was a gathering of factions.
According to Pokharel, out of the 441 previously registered with the Election Commission, except for the deceased, appointed at constitutional posts and ambassadors, updated details have been submitted.
The Election Commission has also received a letter from the Prachanda-Madhav group giving responsibility to Pokhrel, Rajendra Pandey, Mukti Pradhan, Krishna Bhakta Pokhrel, Tikaram Bhattarai, Govinda Bandi and Khimlal Devkota to hold necessary discussions on the legitimacy of the party.
