Pregnant mother airlifted from Dolpa to Surkhet health facility

Dolpa, Feb 1: A 19-year-old pregnant woman from Rahagaun in Thulibheri Municipality-10 in Dolpa district got evacuated by the Nepali Army helicopter to the provincial hospital in Surkhet district on Saturday.

Expectant mother Juna BK’s health condition became critical after the umbilical cord did not come out despite her prolonged labour. She was rushed to the District Hospital in Dolpa on Saturday morning.

BK then suffered an excessive bleeding and was rescued through blood transfusion there. The Hospital, in coordination with the President Woman Upliftment Programme, thereafter provided her free air rescue service and flew her to the provincial hospital in Surkhet, informed Dr Akhanda Upadhyay of the District Hospital, Dolpa.

Dr Upadhyay said that there is a tendency among many pregnant and new mothers not to visit the nearest healthcare facility for routine checkups. Delivery at home in absence of trained midwives further puts the lives of new mothers and newborns at high risk, often leading to untimely and premature deaths.

The health condition of women here is weak owing to various factors such as child marriage, getting pregnant at an early age and lack of nutrition among others.#nepal #health #rss
