President’s move regarding Citizenship Bill riles ruling parties

Kathmandu : The ruling parties have expressed concern over the President’s decision not to certify the Citizenship Bill.

The Bill was send to the Head-of-the-State for authentication following its re-endorsement by the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.

A meeting of the four ruling partners today at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Baluwatar concluded that the President failed to implement and protect the Constitution by not certificating the Citizenship Bill within the constitutional deadline.

” By this move of the President, children of those parents who possess Nepali citizenship have been denied their Constitutional right to obtain the citizenship, and it is capable of attacking on the people’s sovereignty, constitutional supremacy and basic democratic norms and values,” according to the press note issued after the meeting.

The note is signed by Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, former Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Centre ) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, former Prime Minister and CPN ( Unified Socialist) Chair Madhav Kumar Nepal and former Deputy Prime Minister and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal’s Chair Upendra Yadav.

Vice President calls for abiding by Constitution

Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun has said the person who holds the post to comply with and protect the Constitution is not allowed to go beyond the Constitutional limitations.

Issuing a press statement today, the Vice President urged one and all to abide by and protect the Constitution.

“Latest political developments in the country provide a space for raising public voices over the ‘failure’ of the Patron of the Constitution to comply with and protect the Constitution cautiously, and the creation of the situation to raise such voices is unfortunate. It is the duty of each person to comply with the Constitution.”

He urged one and all to do their part as per the Constitution, and follow and protect the country’s main law.

Recalling the celebration of the Constitution Day recently (September 19) in commemoration of the promulgation of the Constitution 2015 by the sovereign Constituent Assembly, he reminded all about their constitutional duties.

TMDP discontent with President’s move not to certify Citizenship Bill

Terai-Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) Lokatantrik Party (TMDP) has expressed its discontentment over the President’s move not to certify the Citizenship Bill within the stipulated time. The Bill was sent to the President following its re-endorsement by the Federal Parliament

In a press statement issued by party Chairperson Brikhesh Chandra Lal here today, the party showed its discontentment that the Constitutional provision to certify the Bill had not been followed by the President.

The statement from the party reads,” The Article 61(4) states that compliance and protection of the constitution shall be the main duties of the President. The President is mandated to certify the Bill when it is sent to the President twice for authentication.”
