Public transportation should be managed, made decent: President Bhandari

Kathmandu, Feb 6: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that the public transportation should be managed and made decent for the road management in the Kathmandu Valley.

During a meeting with the mayors and deputy mayors of the Kathmandu Valley at Office of the President on Monday, the President voiced that the traffic congestion in the city should be resolved, as major problems were created due to excessive number of vehicles, insufficient public vehicles and poor management of traffic system.

“For the resolution of this problem, only wide roads will not suffice. Public transportation should be managed and made decent by giving priority to the big-size vehicles instead of the small ones,” the President added.

President Bhandari also mentioned that limited parking lot is a burning problem in the valley and added that the municipalities and concerned sides should take efforts in a coordinated fashion.

Likewise, the President said that federal, province and local governments in the valley along with the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority, High-Powered Committee for Integrated Development of Bagmati Civilization, Nepal Electricity Authority, Traffic Police, Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) and other specialized agencies of the government should ensure mutual coordination for resolving the issues of the public transportation.

Similarly, President Bhandari drew attention of the chiefs and deputies of the local governments to ensure availability of public libraries in a certain distance to develop the cities of the Kathmandu Valley as the civilized cities.

On the occasion, Bhandari cautioned that the dream for nation building would be translated only if constitutionally-enshrined rights and duties were linked to people’s aspirations for economic prosperity.

Furthermore, President Bhandari urged the local governments’ representative to formulate plans and programmes that best suit to their local specialties.

Stating that immigration from across the country in search of health care, education, trade, business and employment opportunities was high in the Kathmandu Valley, President Bhandari added that transportation, drinking water and sanitation, drainage management and management of river system was a huge challenge in the valley.
