Rastriya Swatantra Party to quit government

RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane

Kathmandu, Feb 5: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (JSP) has decided to quit the government.

A joint meeting of central committee members and lawmakers of the party held today decided to call back its ministers and state minister from the government, shared Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane in a press meet after the meeting.

The meeting, however, decided not to withdraw its support provided to the incumbent government.

There are now two ministers and one state minister of the party in the incumbent cabinet.

Chairman Lamichhane was adamant to get appointed again as Home Minister, but Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda rejected Rabi’s demand.

PM Dahal was facing immense pressure from his own party, CPN Maoist Centre, to keep the portfolio of Ministry of Home Affairs.

Lamichhane was removed from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs after Supreme Court order. The apex court ruled that he was found not following procedure to obtain Nepali citizenship again.

Previously Lamichhane rejected Nepali citizenship and had obtained US citizenship. After he renounced the US citizenship, according to Nepali law, he didn’t apply to the competent Nepali authorities to regain the Nepali citizenship.
