Kathmandu, Dec 2: In the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2080/81 BS (2023/24), more than Rs. 57.71 billion of public debt has been added in Nepal economy. According to the Public Debt Management Office, the public debt which was Rs. 2,299 billion by the end of July has exceeded to Rs. 2,357 billion by the end of November.
According to the statistics of the office up to the end of November, the outstanding domestic debt of Nepal has stood at Rs. 1,183 billion and foreign loan as Rs. 1,174 billion.
Nepal government has so far paid Rs. 65.45 billion as principal and interest for domestic borrowing while Rs. 16.18 billion for foreign debt within four months of the current fiscal year.
During these four months, the government has borrowed Rs. 97.31 billion domestically while received Rs. 15.5 billion from foreign donor parties, including bilateral.
According to the available statistics, the government has incurred public debt three times more than the capital expenditure.
