Sandeep Lamichhane being moved to the Central Jail

Kathmandu: Leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, the suspended captain of the national cricket team, has been sent to the Central Jail for pre-trial detention in the rape case. According to District Court sources, the Kathmandu District Court on Friday ordered Lamichhane to be sent to the Central Jail for remand.

Judge Madhav Prasad Ghimire on Friday ordered the accused Lamichhane to be jailed until the case is settled, after a lengthy debate between the lawyers on behalf of the plaintiff and the defendant.

“The accused has been ordered to be detained until the case is settled,” reads the court order. Senior Advocate Raman Shrestha, Krishna Sapkota, Sabita Bhandari, Luva Mainali and others argued on behalf of Lamichhane.

District Public Prosecutor’s Office Kathmandu filed a case against Lamichhane in Kathmandu court on Monday demanding 10 to 12 years imprisonment and reasonable compensation to the victim from the accused.

The district public prosecutor’s office demanded punishment against Lamichhane for the crime of raping a minor according to sub-section 3 (d) of section 219 of the Criminal Code, 2074 BS. The facts and evidence collected during the investigation state that the minor was raped by Lamichhane in the charge sheet.
