KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order not to appoint Yuvaraj Karki as the new ambassador to Bahrain.
The interim order was issued by a joint bench of Supreme Court Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Prakash Kumar Dhungana after hearing a writ petition filed after the cabinet amended the directive on appointment of ambassadors and recommended Karki as ambassador to Bahrain.
The Council of Ministers had amended the Directive on Appointment of Ambassadors, 2075 BS recently. The same cabinet meeting had recommended Karki as ambassador to Bahrain. Advocate Deepak Bikram Mishra had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court against the decision of the Council of Ministers.
The guideline stipulated that in order to become an ambassador, one should have at least a bachelor’s degree from a university recognized by the Government of Nepal. But the government amended the provision and recommended the appointment of an ambassador.
The Council of Ministers had made an arrangement that a person who has already served as a Minister of the Government of Nepal would not have to have graduated to become an Ambassador.
The Supreme Court has already issued an interim order not to implement the revised directive on the appointment of ambassadors.
