Seven recalled envoys marking attendance as four resign

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Kathmandu, Nov 19: Nepali ambassadors recalled by the government and reassigned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) are currently spending their days merely marking attendance, without being given any specific responsibilities.

On November 3, the government decided to recall ambassadors appointed on political recommendations and instructed 11 of them to report to MoFA effective November 6.

MoFA Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri said that necessary arrangements have been made for the ambassadors who returned to Nepal to work at the Ministry. Of the 11 recalled ambassadors, four have already resigned and their resignations have been formally approved.

However, the remaining seven ambassadors are returning home after simply marking attendance at MoFA. One ambassador, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they were waiting for the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the recall.

A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court challenging the government’s recall decision, claiming it was unlawful. After a preliminary hearing, the Court issued an interim order preventing the implementation of the recall decision. In response, the government instructed the recalled ambassadors to report to MoFA instead.

The ambassadors recalled by the government are:

  • Chandra Kumar Ghimire (United Kingdom)
  • Lokdarshan Regmi (United States)
  • Durga Bahadur Subedi (Japan)
  • Krishna Prasad Oli (China)
  • Shail Rupakheti (Germany)
  • Dhan Prasad Pandit (Israel)
  • Netra Prasad Timilsina (Malaysia)
  • Ramesh Chandra Poudel (Qatar)
  • Jung Bahadur Chauhan (Russia)
  • Naresh Bikram Dhakal (Saudi Arabia)
  • Sanil Nepal (Spain)

Among them, Ghimire, Regmi, Oli, and Poudel have resigned from their posts. #nepal #ambassador
