Kathmandu, April 22: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has resigned from his position. He stepped down following widespread criticism over the past few days related to share transactions, accumulation of assets, and alleged associations with several individuals who have recently been arrested.
According to a press note issued by his secretariat, he stated: “In order to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the matters related to me, and to avoid any conflict of interest while holding office or any influence on the process, I have resigned from the post of Home Minister effective from today.”
Statement from Minister Gurung (via his secretariat):
I, Sudhan Gurung, have been serving as the Home Minister with honesty and dedication since Chaitra 13, 2082. In recent days, I have taken seriously the questions, comments, and public concerns raised by citizens regarding my share-related matters and other issues.
For me, ethics is greater than position, and there is no power greater than public trust. The ongoing movement in the country demanding good governance, transparency, and accountability of Gen Z also sends the same message—that public life must be clean and leadership must be responsible. If anyone questions a government built on the blood and sacrifices of my 46 brothers and sisters, the answer must be ethics.
Therefore, in order to ensure a fair investigation into the matters concerning me and to prevent any appearance of conflict of interest or influence while in office, I have decided to resign from the position of Home Minister, effective today.
I have fulfilled my moral responsibility. Now, I appeal to respected journalists, fellow Nepali brothers and sisters, and the youth—if we truly want change, we must all stand on the path of truth, honesty, and self-purification. Details about where some media personnel hold shares may gradually come to light. Those who wish for an ideal society must also demonstrate sacrifice and moral courage.
