Tea worth Rs 1.37 billion exported through Kakarbhitta

Jhapa, Nov 28: Tea valued at Rs 1.37 billion was exported through the eastern checkpoint at Kakarbhitta during the first four months of the current FY 2025/26.

According to Ishwor Kumar Humagain, Public Information Officer at the Mechi Customs Office, a total of 4,688,932 kilograms of tea was exported to India during the review period.

Compared to the corresponding period last year, tea exports have declined by 37 percent. In the same period last year, tea worth Rs 2.205 billion had been exported, indicating a year-on-year decrease of Rs 831.7 million.

According to data from Department of Customs, over the past three years, Nepal’s tea exports have shown fluctuating in both value and volume. In FY 2022/23, Nepal exported tea worth approximately Rs 3.94 billion, totaling around 16,595 metric tonnes. In 2023/24, export earnings dipped slightly to Rs 3.63 billion, with export volume remaining nearly stable at about 16.5 million kilograms.

However, the trend reversed in FY 2024/25, when tea exports through major customs points reached approx Rs 4.21 billion, despite a decline in volume to nearly 15,417 mt. However, export earnings have increased in FY 2024/25, driven primarily by higher demand and rising prices in key markets, particularly India. #nepal #tea
