Tundikhel underground parking, no construction against public sentiment: Deputy Mayor Dangol

Kathmandu: The Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ms Sunita Dangol has stated that the underground parking won’t be constructed against the will of the local people.

Receiving the protest letter submitted from Occupy Tundikhel Campaign she said the KMC will study and take expert views of local residence before the construction of underground parking in Tundikhel.

She said, “All of us should protect the public land. The KMC is thinking over preparing detailed project report. If Dharahara and Kathmandu Plaza solve the traffic problem of the core Kathmandu area, it is not necessary to construct underground parking at Tundikhel.”

“The KMC will decide on the basis of people’s interest and wishes,” She said.

The 10th Executive meeting of Kathmandu Metropolitan City had decided to prepare a Detailed Project Report of ‘Triple Basement Parking and Water Recharge Pit at Tundikhel.

Now a controversy has emerged over the KMC decision.

Earlier today, Tundikhel Conservation Campaign (“Occupy Tundikhel”) has staged a protest program in front of KMC Office in Kathmandu.

The activists protested saying that the parking lot should not be constructed as it would erase the historical and archaeological importance of Tundikhel (open stage).

They demand that Tundikhel should be returned to its original state. They have been saying that the idea of underground parking is wrong.

Speaking at the protest event, Sanjay Adhikari, the spokesperson of the Occupy Tundikhel Campaign, said that it is necessary for all to protect public land.
