Kathmandu, March 23: The U.S. government is allowing select work for activities under the Nepal Compact to resume while the U.S. foreign assistance review is underway, the MCA-Nepal Office has stated. “This allowance does not indicate any specific outcome of the review.”
The work includes launching critical procurement and necessary operational activities. MCA-Nepal is managing the resumption of activities and remains committed to transparency, the statement released from MCA-Nepal said.
“MCA-Nepal is closely coordinating with the Millennium Challenge Corporation and Government of Nepal to ensure compliance while awaiting updates on the foreign assistance review,” it further said.
The new US government under President Donald Trump has previously ordered to halt almost all foreign assistance at least for 90 days. The MCA-Nepal activities also fell under this review, and US Department of State wrote a letter to the Ministry of Finance in this regard.
With the decision of the US government, Nepal had to face steep challenge to fund the ongoing projects under Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact. According to the MCA-Compact, Nepal is receiving nearly US$ 500 million as grant for the construction of electrical transmission lines, roads and other infrastructure projects. #MCC #nepal #DonaldTrump
