Uber enters Nepal, marking major boost for digital economy

Kathmandu, June 5: Global ride-hailing company  Uber has officially launched its services in Nepal, marking a significant milestone in the country’s rapidly growing digital economy.

Speaking at the launch event, Chelan Bliss, Acting Deputy Chief of US Embassy in Nepal, said Uber’s entry into Nepal reflects growing international confidence in the country’s economic and technological progress.

“Uber’s decision to launch here is a vote of confidence in Nepal’s trajectory — and in the Nepali people,” Bliss stated.

The launch is expected to expand transportation options for consumers, promote innovation in the digital services sector, and create new economic opportunities for drivers and entrepreneurs. The U.S. Embassy noted that American companies such as Uber are contributing to Nepal’s digital transformation by introducing new technologies and business models.

The United States reaffirmed its support for Nepal’s digital growth and increased engagement of U.S. businesses in the country.

In Nepal, consumers had to rely on popular ride sharing like InDrive, Pathao, Tootle and Yango.

The government has introduced a scheme to convert private numbered plates into black and pay taxes including registration fee.
