US Ambassador calls on Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha

Kathmandu, April 5: The US Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson had a courtesy meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha on Wednesday.

In the meeting held today at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nepal-US bilateral relations and exchange of cooperation were discussed. Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha said that the government is focused on completing the rest of the peace process in accordance with the contents of the comprehensive peace agreement on transitional justice, and that assistance is expected from Nepal’s benevolent international bodies, according to Home Ministry.

He also said that the related bill on transitional justice has been presented to the House of Representatives for the creation of a law to complete the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Disappearance Investigation Commission to complete the work of transitional justice. Ambassador Thompson said that the United States wants to see the peace process of Nepal complete and will take initiatives with Nepal government.

On the occassion, Ambassador Thompson said that the United States will provide full support for the strengthening of Nepali democracy. Ambassador Thompson has requested to facilitate the entry permit of Peace Corps volunteers.

The ambassador was also interested in the security of American investments, working organizations and their employees in Nepal. Kamal Giri, Deputy Prime Minister’s press coordinator informed that Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha had assured of full security.
