Wild elephant kills 53-year-old in Morang



Biratnagar, Dec 4: A 53-year-old male died after being attacked by an elephant on Monday at Bhaunne of Belbari municipality-10 in Morang, Nepal. The Morang District Police, Office identified the dead as Kamal Majhi from Letang municipality-3.

He reportedly encountered the wild animal while travelling on his bicycle from Letang to the market at Laxmimarga of Belbari through a community forest area, according to the police.

Pedestrians saw his lifeless body and reported it to the police. The mortal remains were sent to the Urlabari-based Madan Bhandari Hospital and Trauma Centre for a post-mortem.

Locals noticed the movement of a herd of wild animals including calves in the vicinity of Letang and Bhaunne during the night. The animals were chased away from the area with the help of police.

It may be noted Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari, the districts in the Koshi Province, have reported a surge in the attacks by wild elephants for over the past few days. Locals are terrorized with frequent movements of elephant herds through human settlements. Spokesperson for the Morang Police Office, Ranjan Kumar Dahal, said wild animals are unleashing terror by destroying homes and, in some cases, causing fatalities.
