4-point agreement between government and sugarcane farmers

KATHMANDU, Dec 28: An agreement have been reached between the government and sugarcane farmers on Monday. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Home Affairs and the agitating sugarcane farmers’ struggle committee signed the agreement.

As per the agreement, the government will provide the outstanding amount to be paid to the farmers from the concerned industries within 21 days. The MoU also states that further legal action will be taken against the sugar mill owners who did not pay the dues within the stipulated time.

With the agreement, the sugarcane farmers have agreed to suspend their protest. They were staging a protest in Maitighar of Kathmandu for 16 days.

It has also been agreed to form a joint technical committee to study sugarcane farmers and other problems related to the sugar industry and submit suggestions within 120 days.

The committee will look at the claims of the industrialists and sugarcane farmers that are different on the amount to be paid. Similarly, since the sugarcane farmers have complained that they have not received the minimum support price fixed by the Government of Nepal, they will submit suggestions after ascertaining the true facts.

Similarly, the committee will study and submit suggestions on whether the government has given the subsidy to the sugarcane farmers or not. Similarly, the committee will study the problems faced by sugarcane farmers and sugar mills and submit suggestions for long-term and short-term solutions.
