KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said attorneys have significant role to maintain rule of law and administration of criminal justice.

PM Deuba was speaking during a programme organized to mark the 71st anniversary of Office of the Attorney General (OAG) in the federal capital on Wednesday.

PM Deuba urged the attorneys to be committed to rule of law, human rights, and fundamental rights. He also lauded OAG’s role on promotion of rule of law and citizen’s rights. Deuba believed that OAG would deliver its service in a specialized manner.

On the occasion, Attorney General Khamba Bahadur Khati viewed that the problems in judiciary had deprived many people of their rights, and right to justice.

Reasoning this, Attorney General Khati urged PM Deuba to end the present problem in judiciary via parliamentary process and holding discussion with the major opposition.

He also viewed that government should continue support to the OAG for the capacity building of government prosecutors to protect democracy, human rights and independent judiciary.

Similarly, Chairperson of Nepal Bar Association Chandeshwor Shrestha said NBA was in agitation for two months against corruption and anomalies in judiciary. Now, the problems in judiciary need to be resolved via parliament, he reminded PM Deuba.

For the heightened image of independent judiciary, the judiciary must be clean and fair, for which both the government and parliament should be serious, he underscored.

The OAG Day is being observed under the theme of ‘reform in prosecution and development of professionalism’. Even a special issue published by the OAG was released by PM Deuba on the occasion.
