Kathmandu, Jan 27: The CPN (Maoist Centre) has laid emphasis on the need of electing President on the basis of national consensus.
In the Standing Committee meeting of the Party held at the Party Headquarters in Parisdanda on Friday, the party stressed the need of electing the Head of the State on the basis of national consensus.
Most of the speakers in the meeting said although the President has constitutional role, it is necessary to elect the all-acceptable person to this post, said party’s Vice-Chairman and Spokesperson, Krishna Bahadur Mahara.
“We are holding discussion with political parties to build a national consensus in this regard”, he mentioned.
On the occasion, Vice-Chairman Mahara presented a report regarding the issues of discussion held for the party unification with other political parties in recent period.
Similarly, Deputy General Secretaries– Janardan Sharma and Giriraj Mani Pokharel– presented the reports related to party organisation and schooling respectively.
The standing committee will meet next on January 30.
The main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has been demanding for forming consensus on President’s election. However, CPN UML has stated that the power sharing agreement has been already settled with CPN Maoist Centre. According to reports, CPN Maoist Centre will support for UML candidate in the President and House Speaker.
CPN UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has met Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda several rounds in this regards. Many believe that Maoist party was divided over the Oli’s proposal, and not ready to cast votes solely to CPN UML candidate.
Even Chairman Oli is also not fully sure on getting votes from Maoist Centre. In such case, it will be very difficult to win the election for CPN UML. The Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) also looks undecided yet.
