Birgunj, Dec 12: Diesel imports from Birgunj, the main import point of Nepal, have decreased. According to the Birgunj Customs Office, diesel imports declined by 9.41% in the first four months of the current fiscal year.
With the drop in diesel imports, revenue collection has also decreased by 15.16%. During the first four months of fiscal year 2081/82 BS (2024/25), diesel imports amounted to Rs 21.84 billion for 246,719 kiloliters. In the same period last fiscal year, the import figure was Rs 30.18 billion.
Chief Customs Administrator Deepak Lamichhane stated that the reduction in imports of petroleum products, vehicles, and raw materials has affected revenue collection. Diesel is being imported via the Motihari-Amlekhgunj petroleum pipeline, while petrol continues to be transported using tankers.
President of the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal, Rabi Singh, attributed the decline in diesel imports to the stagnation in the construction sector until the end of Kartik this fiscal year. He emphasized, “The government must revitalize the construction sector. Without that, capital expenditure will not increase.”
Additionally, during the first four months of the current fiscal year, petrol imports stood at Rs 12.42 billion for 142,865 kiloliters. In the same period last fiscal year, petrol imports were worth Rs 13.18 billion. #petrol #diesel #nepal
