Govt revokes honorary consuls’ vehicle blue number plates

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Kathmandu, Oct 10: The government has revoked the blue number plates issued for vehicles used by honorary consuls (unpaid consuls general) appointed by foreign countries in Nepal.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision was made today in accordance with international laws related to honorary consuls, the principle of reciprocity, and the Honorary Consul Regulations, 1982 (2039 BS), as well as current practices.

At present, there are 67 honorary consuls in Nepal, of which 50 had been using vehicles with blue diplomatic number plates.

The ministry said the decision was taken in response to growing complaints about the misuse of vehicles bearing blue number plates. The existing vehicles with blue diplomatic plates will now be converted into private vehicles, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will coordinate with relevant authorities to implement the decision.

However, honorary consuls will continue to have the privilege of using the national flag of their appointing country within their designated consular area during Nepal’s national day celebrations, the national day of the appointing country, visits by the appointing country’s head of state, head of government, or foreign minister, and official meetings, welcomes, and farewells during the visit of that country’s ambassador to Nepal. #nepal #consular #foreign #diplomacy
