Lalitpur, Dec 19: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Kulman Ghising has stressed the need to promote the use of locally produced materials across the country.
Speaking at the launch of the Bamboo Structures Design Guidelines 2082, organized by Habitat for Humanity Nepal under the theme “Bamboo Housing for the Future,” the Minister said the government is prioritizing policies that encourage the utilization of local products and technologies.
“The use of local production and technology creates employment opportunities. Commercial bamboo cultivation not only meets domestic construction needs but also helps reduce the outflow of foreign currency spent on imported construction materials. Therefore, we must utilize local technology in construction and focus on preserving our originality,” Minister Ghising said.
Minister Ghising, who also holds the portfolio of the Ministry of Urban Development, noted that the underutilization of domestic timber and timber-based products has adversely affected the national economy. He emphasized the need to increase the use of bamboo and other indigenous materials in constructing durable, technology-friendly, and earthquake-resistant structures.
Secretary at the Ministry of Urban Development Gopal Prasad Sigdel said the Ministry is prepared to prioritize and promote the use of local products through policy and implementation measures.
Similarly, Director General of the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction Rabindra Bohara stated that the Department is committed to formulating and enforcing the necessary policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures for the construction of climate-friendly, earthquake-resistant structures that are suited to local conditions. #nepal #kulman
