National Child Policy formulated to strengthen the child protection system

Kathmandu, Jan 26: The government has prepared the National Children Policy, 2080 BS to strengthen the child protection system in the country.

The Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens formulated this policy by reviewing the National Policy on Children- 2069 BS for addressing in a more sensitive and result-oriented manner the emerging new issues on child rights and protection in line with the change in the governance system and as per the national and international commitments.

National Child Rights Council’s information officer Ram Bahadur Chand said that the Council is in need of a policy in consonance with the federalism and expressed the confidence that the policy will support the smooth mobilization of various bodies and non-governmental organisations working in the child protection sector.

He said that the policy will facilitate in strengthening of the local level mechanisms by using the new approaches in child protection. It is stated that the policy will contribute to strengthening the child rights protection, promotion and child protection by systematizing the institutional structures of the three tiers of the government for providing protection to the children requiring special protection, children who are the victims of violence and harassment.

The policy is also expected to help develop child-friendly services and behaviour and harmonize the plans and programmes related to children in the public, private, cooperative, NGO and community sectors.

The policy has the vision of building children-friendly nation, ensuring the children’s rights. Its goal is to achieve the holistic development of children and to respect, protect and promote the child rights keeping in mind the supreme interest of every child.#Nepal
