Kathmandu, Nov 24: In Last four months of the current fiscal year 2080/81 BS, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), government entity of Nepal, has successfully exported electricity valued at 12.5 billion Rupees to India. This export resulted in earnings of 12.50 billion Rupees, derived from the sale of 1.36 billion units of electricity in the months of Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashwin, and Kartik, 2080 BS.
Comparatively, this electricity export figure represents a significant increase of Rs 4.86 billion compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year 2079/80. In the first 4 months of the prior year, the authority exported 983.8 million units of electricity, generating earnings of 7.63 billion Rupees.
The electricity export initiative commenced on the 28th of Jestha, with the authority channeling electricity surplus from the rainy season to the Indian market. From Jestha to Kartik, a total of 1.62 billion units of electricity were exported, resulting in earnings of 14.50 arba Rupees.
Breaking down the earnings per month, the authority exported electricity worth Rs 2.14 billion in Shrawan, Rs 3.47 billion in Bhadra, Rs 4.17 billion in Ashwin, and Rs 2.69 billion in Kartik. The overall average electricity sales rate for the first four months stands at Rs 9.18 per unit, showcasing an increase from the Rs 7.76 per unit average rate during the same period in the previous year.
Mr. Kulman Ghising, the Executive Director of the Authority, highlighted that the electricity exports contributed significantly, earning 7.84 billion Indian rupees in the four-month duration. This, in turn, played a role in alleviating the country’s foreign exchange reserves and mitigating the trade deficit between Nepal and India.
The authority has been strategically exporting electricity saved during the rainy season, with approximately 110 MW of electricity being sold to the Indian company NTPC Electricity Trading Corporation Li-NVVN through competition in IX Day-ahead market and under the medium-term power agreement.
NVVN further sells this electricity in the state of Haryana. India’s Central Electricity Authority has granted permission for the sale of around 44 MW of electricity in the real-time market out of the approved 522 MW for export to the competitive market in the first phase.
The Nepal Electricity Authority has secured approval for exporting 522 megawatts to the competitive market and 110 MW megawatts to NVVN totalling 632 MW, with 562 megawatts through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur 400 KV international transmission line and 70 MW through the Mahendranagar-Tankapur 132 KV transmission line.
