U.S. Envoy Sergio Gor Concludes Nepal Visit, Boosts Tech & Cultural Ties

Kathmandu: Sergio Gor, the U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, has concluded a productive visit to Nepal, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation, expanding commercial partnerships, and promoting cultural collaboration.

During his stay, Gor held high-level meetings with key Nepali leaders including Rabi Lamichhane, Shisir Khanal, and Swarnim Wagle. Discussions centered on enhancing the long-standing partnership between Nepal and the United States, with particular emphasis on boosting trade, investment, and opportunities in Nepal’s growing technology sector.

A highlight of the visit was Gor’s trip to Everest Base Camp, where he received a briefing on innovative American drone technology being integrated into Everest cleanup efforts. The initiative, led by Nepali organizations, aims to revolutionize logistics on Mount Everest by enabling rapid delivery of supplies—reducing multi-day treks to just minutes.

“The United States leads in innovation, and we are glad to partner with local Nepali companies to bring cutting-edge technology to Nepal,” Gor said, expressing optimism about deeper engagement with Nepal’s new government.

In addition to economic and technological cooperation, cultural diplomacy also featured prominently. Gor attended a ceremony at Nhu: Chhen Baha marking the return of the sacred Akshobhya Buddha statue from the United States—part of ongoing efforts to repatriate stolen religious artifacts.

He also visited the historic Bhaktapur Durbar Square, experiencing Nepal’s rich cultural heritage firsthand.

The visit underscores growing momentum in U.S.-Nepal relations, spanning technology, trade, environmental initiatives, and cultural preservation. #nepal
