Will PM Karki unveil Gen-Z report? Government faces ongoing dilemma

Gen Z protest probe commission Chair Mr Gauri Bahadur Karki submits report to the Prime Minister Sushila Karki on March 8, 2026.

Kathmandu, March 24: The Gauri Bahadur Karki Commission, formed to investigate human and material damages during the Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9, 2025, has already submitted their report to the Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

Sixteen days after receiving the report, doubts continue to linger over whether the Karki led incumbent government will make it public.

Different political parties, excluding Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), civil society, stakeholders and many Gen Z groups have been demanding the immediate public release of the report. The tenure of the present government remains until Thursday, and on Friday, RSP Senior Leader Balen Shah will sworn in as Prime Minister.

However, according to sources, the Karki government is preparing to public release of the report by tomorrow, the last of it’s tenure.

According to a senior member of the present government, the report is with the Prime Minister herself, and she has the right to make it public or not. Although discussions were held among Cabinet members, no consensus was reached, leaving the final decision solely to the Prime Minister.

Sources indicate that a decision could be made as early as Wednesday, regarding whether the summary of the findings will be disclosed.

The report reportedly includes recommendations for action against individuals linked to the incidents, including former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Nepal Police Chief Chandra Kuber Khapung, raising concerns among security agencies.

Officials from the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force Nepal are said to have urged the government not to publish the report, as it could lead to action against top leadership. Additionally, a separate report by the National Human Rights Commission has also recommended action involving senior military leadership.

Meanwhile, victims of the protests and Gen-Z leaders have been continuously demanding that the report be made public and that those responsible be held accountable.

It is also reported that Prime Minister Karki has held consultations with likely next Prime Minister Balen Shah regarding the matter, although details of their discussion remain undisclosed. #nepal #genz
