KATHMANDU: Central committee member of Nepal Communist Party (Dahal-Nepal faction) Ram Kumari Jhankri has been released from police custody on Thursday evening. She had been arrested on the charge of committing a crime against the state earlier today.

She was released following a written commitment stating that she would always respect the President as an institution and also individual, said Nepal Police Spokesperson SSP Basant Bahadur Kunwar.

Jhankri was arrested from her residence in Sankhamul, Kathmandu-31 by a team from the metropolitan crime control division.

The charges against her were leveled following a statement she made against the President while speaking at an event in Gorkha. The All Nepal Women’s Association had submitted a memo calling for action against Jhankri. Based on the complaint, she was taken into custody for necessary investigation, SSP Kunwar said.

In her comments following the release, leader Jhankri said she would always respect the institution of the president, however she has not mentioned anything about the President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

The arrest and detention of Jhakri was criticised by Nepal Communist Party, and other civil society organization. Even a writ was filed in Supreme Court today to seeking immediate release from the detention.

A group of youth associated to NCP demanded to immediate release from the detention. They were protesting throughout the day in different parts of the downtown Baneshwor. They clashed with the police as well.
