Kathmandu, Nov 6: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case at the Special Court in Kathmandu against former tax officer Tilak Ale of the Inland Revenue Office, Dharan, and Santosh Kumar Basnet, Managing Director of Swaminarayan Construction Service Pvt. Ltd., Dharan.
According to the CIAA, Sundarharaicha Municipality of Morang had awarded Swaminarayan Construction Service a contract worth Rs 95.51 million (excluding VAT) on Jestha 28, 2077 BS for the extraction of sand and gravel from the Gachhiya River.
However, the company failed to deposit Rs 12.36 million in VAT dues at the Inland Revenue Office and instead submitted fake documents to evade taxes, the CIAA stated.
The charge sheet further alleges that tax officer Ale and Contractor Basnet, in collusion, forged official documents at the Inland Revenue Office, Dharan, claiming that the VAT amount had been deposited, and then sent false correspondence to the municipality, thereby committing revenue fraud.
The CIAA has demanded recovery of Rs 12.36 million each from both accused as compensation for the loss caused to the state. #nepal #ciaa #corruption
