Birgunj, Nov 6: The import of electric vehicles through the Birgunj customs checkpoint has surged significantly in the first three months of the current fiscal year 2025/26.
According to the Birgunj Customs Office, a total of 229 electric jeeps, cars, and vans worth Rs 680.5 million were imported during this period. In comparison, only 97 units valued at Rs 144.9 million were imported in the same period of the previous fiscal year (2024/25).
Officials attribute this sharp rise in imports to the growing public attraction toward electric vehicles and the deteriorating condition of roads along the Chinese border, which has limited imports from the northern route.
The customs office collected Rs 457.2 million in revenue from electric jeeps, cars, and vans during the review period — a substantial increase from Rs 91.1 million collected in the corresponding months of last fiscal year.
Similarly, imports of electric motorcycles have also increased. A total of 2,194 units worth Rs 287.9 million entered Nepal through Birgunj in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, compared to 1,481 units valued at Rs 211.7 million during the same period last year.
Chief Customs Administrator Bishnu Prasad Gyawali confirmed the upward trend, noting a “significant rise in the import of electric vehicles in recent months.” #nepal #import #vehicles
