Government declare Bhakti Thapa a National Hero

KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal has declared Bhakti Thapa as a National Hero of Nepal. A cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to include Thapa in the national list, said government spokesperson and Minister for Information Basant Kumar Nembang.

With this, the number of national heroes has reached 17. Thapa, a veteran of the Nepal-British war, has long been demanded to be declared a National Hero.

At the age of 73, Thapa, who had fought with a Khukuri against the then East India Company (British) at Deuthal, died in the same battle. The Nepal-British War ended in 1815.
