KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari, on the recommendation of the Government of Nepal, has repealed the ordinance on the Constitutional Council.
According to a letter received by President Bhandari from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Sunday, the Government has revoked the Constitutional Council (First Amendment) Ordinance, 2078 BS in accordance with clause (b) of Article 114 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal.
The Nepali Congress have been demanding to repeal the Ordinance citing it has obstructed the spirit of the Constitution provisions. Previously the Council would recommend all the constitutional bodies to be appointed through consensus system.
But former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli came up with the Ordinance which removed the provision of consensus system. Instead, he proposed for the majority system.
The KP Oli-led government has appointed many constitutional heads and other members through the new Ordinance. Most of them have assumed office and working without parliamentary hearings.
Meanwhile, the government has cancelled all the latest appointment of ambassadors for different countries. The previous KP Oli government has recommended 11 ambassadors but were waiting for the agree-mo.
