New UN Migration Agency Chief in Nepal Presents Credentials to Foreign Minister Gyawali

Kathmandu, Sept 11: Newly-appointed International Organization for Migration (IOM) Chief of Mission for Nepal Lorena Lando presented her credentials to Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Gyawali on 10th Sept 2019. United Nations Resident Coordinator a.i. for Nepal Dr. Jos Vandelaer was present at the ceremony.

Receiving the credentials, Minister Gyawali congratulated Ms Lando.

Ms Lando, an Italian national who has served as an IOM official for over 20 years and was previously the agency’s Chief of Mission in Tunisia, underlined IOM’s commitment to support the Government in its pursuit of safe, orderly and regular migration as envisioned by the Global Compact on Migration and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

“We will continue to support the Government’s efforts in mainstreaming migration into national policies and share the view that migration needs to be addressed holistically to fully contribute to the achievement of Nepal’s development goals,” she said.

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Agency of the UN and the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration. With 173 member states and another eight states holding observer status, it has some 400 offices worldwide and is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration.

In 2007 it signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Government of Nepal and over the next decade facilitated the resettlement of over 100,000 Bhutanese refugees from Nepal to eight other countries. IOM Nepal’s wide range of programmes continue to support the Government’s efforts to manage migration humanely and effectively.
