A meeting has been held between Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Chairman of the main opposition party, CPN (UML), KP Sharma Oli at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar.
During the meeting, discussions were focused on the current political situation in the country, removing the obstruction in the House of Representatives, and approving the US-backed Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
After the MCC was presented in the House of Representatives on February 20, the ruling parties are holding intensive discussions to get it passed.
Nepali Congress President and Prime Minister Deuba has been actively working to ensure passage of the MCC.
However, the meeting between PM Deuba and Chairman Oli couldn’t settle down the differences, particularly to normalise situation for the smooth operation of House session. UML Chairman Oli and his team demanded to resolve the same issue.
The UML is demanding to make correction on the decision for breakaway MPs of the CPN UML. They blame to Speaker Agni Sapkota who didn’t dismiss MPs who were elected from the CPN UML.
CPN UML Chair KP Sharma Oli raised the same issue with PM Deuba. However, Deuba was not interested to address Oli’s demand as of now. However, he was requesting to forget the past incidents and move forward with new chapter.
Deuba and Oli have been intensely discussing in these days. The sources speculate that the Oli was ready to give unconditional support to Deuba. But Deuba was not ready to terminate the present coalition in haste.
However, Deuba is in awkward position because of the activities of coalition partners, particularly from Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ led CPN (Maoist Center) and Madhav Kumar led CPN (Unified Socialist). They agreed to save present coalition government and table the MCC compact in parliament. However, they are still in confusion whether to take part or not at the time of voting.
In such scenario, PM Deuba is trying to garner support from main opposition CPN (UML).
