Samprit Rai: Trailblazing guitarist fusing tradition, innovation, and healing

Samprit Rai, a nationally honored guitarist and composer, has been a leading figure in Nepal’s contemporary music landscape for over 15 years. Celebrated for his innovative fusion style, Rai seamlessly blends traditional Nepali instruments with modern guitar arrangements, producing music that is deeply rooted in heritage while resonating with global audiences.

Rai holds the rare distinction of receiving the National Music Honor and Award in the Guitarist category twice — in 2022 and again in 2025. Presented by the Music Association of Nepal (MAN) in collaboration with national cultural bodies, the award is among the highest musical honors in the country.

Both times, Rai was the sole recipient in his category, recognized for cultural innovation, technical mastery, and his efforts in promoting Nepali music internationally as well as using music as a tool for mental well-being.

Rai has also contributed as a mentor and jury member in several prestigious competitions. In 2020, he served on the judging panel of the Sadhana Online Talent Hunt, Nepal’s first large-scale online singing competition that attracted nearly 100 participants nationwide. In 2024, he joined the expert jury for the Virtual Battle of the Bands, jointly organized by Sangeet Pathshala and Nepali Guitar Tutorial, where over 70 bands from diverse genres competed.

A lifetime member of MAN and a member of the National Creator and Performer Academy (NCPA), Rai is regarded as a cultural leader in Nepal’s music fraternity. Beyond competitions and stage performances, he has pioneered the use of music in sound healing.

His live sessions combine guitar with folk instruments, singing bowls, and therapeutic sounds to support mental health, particularly among children, adolescents, senior citizens, and vulnerable groups. His initiatives focus on easing stress, reducing anxiety, and fostering peace and meditation in communities.

Rai’s artistry has also gained international recognition. On International Volunteer Day, he led a fusion performance for the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), combining guitar with tabla, sarangi, and vocals. Broadcast nationwide, the piece was lauded for its creative message of volunteerism and solidarity.

From winning Nepal’s highest music honors to mentoring the next generation and integrating music into wellness programs, Samprit Rai continues to shape Nepal’s evolving music culture and represent it on the global stage. #Nepal
