24 writ petitions filed against dissolution of House of Representatives

KATHMANDU: Twenty-four writ petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

The main parties in the opposition alliance are Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), Madhav Kumar Nepal faction of CPN (UML), Upendra Yadav-Dr Baburam Bhattarai of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and Rastriya Janamorch. A total of 146 lawmakers from this opposition alliance filed a writ petition seeking reinstatement of the House of Representatives.

They have also demanded that Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba be appointed as the Prime Minister.

Spokesperson of the Supreme Court Bhadrakali Pokharel informed that 139 lawmakers had appeared in person and seven others had filed writ petitions demanding reinstatement of the House of Representatives. Apart from this, various people have filed 23 more writ petitions demanding reinstatement of the House of Representatives, he said.

Similarly, four other writ petitions have also been filed in the Supreme Court demanding the election of KP Sharma Oli as the Prime Minister as per Article 76(5) of the Constitution.

Supreme Court spokesperson Pokharel said that 24 writ petitions for the restoration of the House of Representatives and four writ petitions for Prime Minister Oli were in the process of registration.

Nine of the 28 writ petitions are related to the Constitutional Bench while the remaining 15 writ petitions have been filed for the Regular Bench. “Preliminary hearings will be held according to where the application was made,’ he said.
