Govt appoints Arjun Ghimire NTA Chairman



Kathmandu, July 14: The government has appointed Arjun Ghimire as the Chairman of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), the regulatory body of telecom sector in Nepal.

The appointments was made by the Council of Ministers on July 8. Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Bikram Timilsina handed over the appointment letter to Chairman Ghimire on Monday.

Congratulating the NTA Chairman, Minister Dr Timilsina said he had been selected through a competitive process and urged him to perform responsibilities in a fair, impartial and results-oriented manner.

He said the recommendation committee had selected him based on its confidence in their ability to lead the NTA effectively and strengthen Nepal’s information and communications sector.

The minister also emphasized the importance of the telecommunications sector and called on the new NTA leadership to develop short, medium and long-term action plans that prioritise citizens’ interests and improve the quality of telecommunications services.

He assured that the ministry would provide the necessary policy and institutional support to help achieve these objectives.

Speaking after receiving his appointment letter, NTA Chair Arjun Ghimire pledged to address longstanding challenges in the telecommunications sector by tackling existing shortcomings and improving service delivery.

He said he was committed to building a citizen-centred, accountable and efficient telecommunications sector, adding that he would work closely with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and other stakeholders to provide reliable, high-quality and customer-friendly services.

Who is Mr Arjun Ghimire?

Prior to his appointment as Chairman, Mr Ghimire was serving as a Director at Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA).

NTA’s Introduction

Nepal Telecommunications Authority is the telecommunications regulatory body of Nepal. It is an autonomous body established on Feb 1998 in accordance with Telecommunications Act, 1997 and Telecommunications Regulation, 1998. It’s objective is to create a favorable and competitive environment for the development, expansion and operation of telecommunications services with the private sector participation in Nepal.

It’s aims are:

  1. To make the telecommunications service reliable and easily available to the public.
  2. To make necessary arrangement to avail basic telecommunications service and facilities in all rural and urban areas throughout the kingdom of Nepal.
  3. To protect the rights and interests of consumers by ensuring the provision of quality service.
  4. To make arrangement for the coordination and healthy competition among the persons providing Telecommunications Service and facilities.
